Hike Hoods | Castle Rock

by Brandi O'King & Nick Sivek

Discover Castle Rock, the Hidden Gem of the Village of Oak Creek (VOC)

Ask any tourist and they will point to Bell Rock as the centerpiece of the Village of Oak Creek. Ask a local, and most will tell you the real gem is Castle Rock. It gets its name the way most rock formations do, by looking the part. Look closely and you can even make out the shape of a drawbridge.

The Shape Behind the Name

Castle Rock is made up of two spires, Castle Rock itself and North Castle Tower, joined by a natural saddle. Just to the west, along SR179, sits Seven Warriors Mesa, a separate but equally dramatic formation that is impossible to miss while driving between the Chapel neighborhood and the Village of Oak Creek. Together, these formations give this stretch of the Village of Oak Creek a skyline that rivals anything in Sedona proper, minus the crowds.

Sunset Views Worth the Short Hike

The hike to the saddle between Castle Rock and North Castle Tower is easy to moderate, with a little bit of uphill to earn the payoff. The sanctioned route starts at the Bell Rock Trailhead off SR179, where the Templeton Trail heads west and climbs to the saddle in under 30 minutes. From up top, Cathedral Rock, Thunder Mountain, and Red Rock Crossing all come into view as the sun goes down, and it is rarely crowded even at golden hour.

For hikers who want to explore further, a few other favorites sit just minutes away:

  • Bell Rock Pathway, a flat, scenic trail running parallel to SR179 with direct views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte
  • Transept Trail, accessible from the Yavapai Vista parking area, which winds along the west side of Seven Warriors Mesa
  • Yavapai Vista Trail, a short out and back trail with some of the best panoramic views in the area

Living the Village of Oak Creek Lifestyle

Part of what makes this neighborhood special is how much is packed into a small footprint. A short walk or drive puts you in the middle of it all.

  • Bike & Bean, tucked into Bell Rock Plaza, is Sedona's original bike shop and coffee counter, serving riders and coffee drinkers since 1994
  • Red Chopstick, also in Bell Rock Plaza, has been a family owned Chinese restaurant in the Village of Oak Creek for nearly three decades
  • The Collective Sedona is home to several local favorites for a night out, including Cucina Rustica for rustic Italian, Decanter Tasting Room for wine and charcuterie, and Full Moon Saloon for Sedona's only late night entertainment venue open until 2 a.m.
  • Absolute Bikes rounds out the neighborhood's mountain biking scene with rentals, gear, and expert local knowledge
  • FireCreek Coffee and Oak Creek Espresso give locals two solid options for a coffee run or a spot to catch up with friends
