A Guide to Sedona’s Distinct Areas

Where to Call Home in Red Rock Country

A guide to Sedona's distinct areas, from the Coleman Real Estate Group

Sedona red rock landscape

Those ancient red rock monuments and sacred canyons have a way of speaking to people. Almost everyone who calls Sedona home can point to the moment it happened for them. However Sedona speaks to you, finding a home here begins with discovering the part of the landscape that feels like yours.

Part of what makes Sedona so extraordinary is how little of it can ever be privately owned. Its neighborhoods are surrounded by Coconino National Forest and federally protected wilderness, including Red Rock–Secret Mountain and Munds Mountain. These public lands preserve the scenery, extensive trail systems, and open space that define the Sedona lifestyle, while leaving a surprisingly limited supply of privately owned, deeded land. This rare balance of protected surroundings, exceptional access to nature, and finite property is one of the primary reasons Sedona real estate carries such lasting value.

With that bigger picture in mind, below is our field guide to Sedona’s distinct areas, shaped by the questions and priorities we hear most often from buyers, along with a few of our own favorite trails, restaurants, and local stops in each one.

Uptown

Uptown is the heart and soul of Sedona. It's known for lively restaurants, unique shops, art galleries, and tour operators, all sitting beneath some of the area's most iconic red rock views. Just above the activity of Uptown, quiet residential streets climb into the surrounding hills, where many homes enjoy incredible views and convenient access to town. Architecture here ranges from classic pueblo-style homes to mid-century modern designs and newer luxury residences tucked into the landscape. Living near Uptown offers a rare mix of walkability, scenery, and character that captures the true spirit of Sedona.

Worth knowing: Elote Cafe on Jordan Road is Uptown's most talked-about dinner reservation, known for elevated Mexican cuisine and a strict no-walk-ins policy. Reservations fill quickly, but we know a few insider tips that may help. Contact us and we’ll happily share! Other favorites include the casual Canyon Breeze Restaurant with epic views and Wildflower, which has some of the best sandwiches and coffee in town!

Uptown offers surprisingly varied trail access, from easy scenic loops to more adventurous red rock hikes. Schnebly Hill Road climbs east toward the historic Munds Wagon Trail, a favorite for sweeping views overlooking Sedona, while the Jim Thompson Trailhead opens onto the Jordan Trail and Brins Mesa. Jordan Trail and Cibola Pass combine into an easy, scenic two-mile loop, and Brins Mesa rewards a moderate climb with expansive views of Coffee Pot Rock, Wilson Mountain, Chimney Rock, and the surrounding landscape. It's a rare opportunity to leave from the edge of Uptown and feel fully immersed in Sedona's red rocks within minutes.

West Sedona

West Sedona has a welcoming neighborhood feel and is one of the most convenient areas in town, with easy access to local restaurants, shops, schools, and trailheads. The area stretches north toward the luxury homes near Seven Canyons and the Red Rock–Secret Mountain Wilderness, and connects south into the Upper Red Rock Loop. Along Dry Creek Road, buyers can still find rare larger parcels within the city limits, including equestrian properties and homes with added privacy and space. West Sedona offers a great mix of everyday livability, natural beauty, and diverse housing options.

Worth knowing: West Sedona is trailhead central. Devil's Bridge, Doe Mountain, Bear Mountain, Fay Canyon, and Boynton Canyon are all reachable from the Dry Creek Road corridor. Parking fills fast, so the free Sedona Shuttle running Thursday through Sunday to the Dry Creek Vista and Mescal trailheads is worth knowing about before a buyer's first hike. Sugarloaf is an easy out & back sunset hike near Amitabha Stupha if you want something a little closer in. And the iconic Soldier's Pass is in this area as well.

Day to day, West Sedona is where locals spend their time, at spots like ChocolaTree Organic Eatery, where a lush garden patio creates one of the most inviting atmospheres in Sedona, Rose Vortex Cafe for the healing morning brew, Sunset Park for the kids, or Whole Foods for grocery.

Seven Canyons, the private golf community north of town, is one of the few places in Sedona where buyers can pair a golf membership with true seclusion.

Red Rock Loop

Upper Red Rock Loop offers a sense of seclusion just south of West Sedona's main corridor, tucked into some of the area's most photographed scenery. Residents enjoy easy creek access through Crescent Moon Ranch, iconic Cathedral Rock views throughout the area, and close proximity to the quieter trails of Red Rock State Park. For buyers seeking epic views, outstanding trail access, and relative privacy without sacrificing convenience, Upper Red Rock Loop is hard to beat. Most homes here are still only 10 to 20 minutes from West Sedona's shops and restaurants, making this area an ideal blend of outdoor access and everyday livability.

Cathedral Rock via Baldwin Trail

Worth knowing: The Secret Slickrock Trail is one of the most popular photography spots in the area, with sweeping, unobstructed views of Cathedral Rock that draw photographers at sunrise and sunset. For a bigger adventure, hikers can follow a roughly five-mile round-trip route from Crescent Moon Ranch to the summit of Cathedral Rock's. This roughly 5-mile round trip trail includes an Oak Creek crossing and a rock scramble near the top, making it one of the most memorable hikes in the Sedona area.

Chapel and the Arts District

Named for Sedona's iconic Chapel of the Holy Cross, the Chapel area begins near the "Y" where Highway 89A meets 179 and stretches past Tlaquepaque and Hillside toward the surrounding National Forest. The area is known for stunning views of some of Sedona's most recognizable red rock formations, including Snoopy Rock and Cathedral Rock. Although it sits in the center of Sedona, the Chapel area is filled with quiet, tucked-away neighborhoods. Many homes here enjoy dramatic views, peaceful settings, and convenient access to Uptown, West Sedona, and nearby trail systems.

Sedona's iconic Chapel of the Holy Cross, an architectural gem one with the red rocks!

Worth knowing: This is the neighborhood for buyers who want to walk out their door and be at a top Sedona trail in minutes. Little Horse Trail leads to the famous Chicken Point overlook, while Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock are both a short drive away. Looking for something unique? Raven Caves are a hidden gem right off Highway 179 (the famous Red Rock Scenic Byway). This is a quick quarter-mile walk to a series of rock alcoves overlooking Oak Creek. Parking is limited, so have a back-up plan!

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village anchors the dining and gallery scene here, with more than 40 shops and restaurants including Oak Creek Brewery & Grill, RENE Restaurant & Wine Bar, and Secret Garden Café

Hillside Sedona is right across from Tlaquepaque and home to some of the area's most sought after eateries, The Hudson and Javelina Cantina. For the kids, Imagine 3D Golf brings custom Sedona artwork to a round of mini golf and is sure to be a hit. Mariposa, right off 89A, rounds out the area's top dinner options. It's Sedona's most celebrated fine dining destination, known for elevated Latin-inspired cuisine and sweeping sunset views over the red rocks.

Village of Oak Creek

The Village of Oak Creek, known locally as the VOC, is home to three popular golf courses, a growing mix of restaurants and shops, and is surrounded by some of Sedona's most iconic red rock landmarks, including Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Cathedral Rock. The area offers a wide range of housing options, from golf course and gated communities to townhomes, condos, single-family homes, and larger properties with room to spread out. Many buyers are drawn to the VOC for its scenic beauty, relaxed lifestyle, and slightly quieter feel just minutes from the rest of Sedona.

Worth knowing: Golf lovers have three public options here: Sedona Golf Resort on Ridge Trail Drive, Oakcreek Country Club on Bell Rock Boulevard, and Canyon Mesa Country Club on Jacks Canyon Road.

The Bell Rock Pathway and Courthouse Butte Loop are flat, accessible trails right in the VOC's backyard, popular with residents who want a daily walk with a red rock view rather than a full-day hike.

For breakfast and lunch, Red Rock Cafe is the go-to spot, while Cucina Rustica is a great choice for dinner. The Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock rounds things out with a pool day pass and spa access, all within the same neighborhood.

Oak Creek Canyon

As you head up the canyon from Uptown toward Slide Rock State Park, homes become fewer but increasingly unique and charming. From creekside cottages and tucked-away cabins to custom homes nestled among piñon and ponderosa pines, this area offers a truly special setting. Oak Creek Canyon properties are known for their natural beauty, cooler temperatures, and peaceful surroundings, making them some of the most distinctive homes in the Sedona area.

89A into Oak Creek Canyon

Worth knowing: Slide Rock State Park is the obvious summer draw, but it fills to capacity early on hot weekends, so buyers who live in the canyon get to enjoy it on weekday mornings when it's quiet. Further up, the West Fork Trail (Call of the Canyon) is one of the most photographed hikes in northern Arizona and a short drive from any canyon home.

For Dining, Indian Gardens Café & Market sits right along Highway 89A in the heart of the canyon. Established in 1940, it's the oldest continually operated general store in the Sedona area, and its Friday pizza night has become a weekly tradition for canyon residents.

Surrounding Communities

About an hour north of Sedona, Flagstaff offers a larger mountain town atmosphere, home to Northern Arizona University and outdoor attractions like the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort. Just 20 minutes southwest of Sedona, the Verde Valley is also home to Arizona's rapidly growing wine country and the Verde Valley Wine Trail. With more than two dozen vineyards stretching from Cottonwood to Jerome, the region has become a popular destination for wine lovers. Nearby communities such as Page Springs, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Cornville, Jerome, and Camp Verde each offer their own character, charm, and often more value while still being close to Sedona.

The town of Jerome with the famous Grand Hotel at the top of the hill.

Worth knowing: Buyers drawn to Sedona who don't want to live in the heart of it sometimes find their place in one of the surrounding communities, each with its own personality and pace. Cornville appeals to the wine lover and anyone craving a slower pace of life, with Page Springs Cellars, D.A.Ranch, and Javelina Leap Vineyard all in close proximity. Jerome and Clarkdale appeal to the history lover: Jerome, once billed as "the wickedest town in the West," is now a cliffside artist colony of galleries, old saloons, and mining ruins clinging to Cleopatra Hill, while the scenic and popular Verde Canyon Railroad offers a slower look at that same mining-era past. Cottonwood, meanwhile, appeals to buyers who want modern convenience and more options nearby, from shopping to dining to everyday errands. Curious about Cottonwood specifically?
